SYMBOLS OF LENT

February 20th, 2010

Symbols are ways to reinforce the meaning of a celebration. This Lent, we are encouraging you to put these symbols in your homes to remind us of the season.

1. Crucifix – symbol of God’s love for all of us.

2. Water – an ongoing reminder of our journey to the font of new life in Christ.

3. Sand (a bowl) – to remind us of our journey from slavery of sin to God’s promise land.

4. Candle – a symbol of God’s lighting our home when tensions and  stress seem to creep in.

5. Bible – a reminder of God’s love story with mankind.

Let the season remind us of how lucky we are to have a God whose definition of love is eternal and unfathomable.

Lent

February 15th, 2010

Ash Wednesday, February 17, marks the start of the Lenten Season.

Lent means “spring”, or “new birth”.

Traditionally, Lent is a season where Catholics are asked to do penance, fasting and almsgiving.

These three Lenten pillars of our faith will give us a chance to strengthen our relationship to God, ourselves and our neighbors.

Fasting (one full meal only and no meat) is asked from adults 18-59 years old, unless you are excused from doing so. Abstinence (from meat)  is required from kids 14 and above.

This year, St. Mary, as part of our gesture of sacrifice, we are asked to give up something and at the same time, share any amount for the victims of earthquake in Haiti.
